Why I am doing this?
I came across 20Hours for 20Talk on my Facebook, in a doom scrolling brain rot kind of night instead of trying to get some sleep. I had a look what they were all about and they are trying to break down mental health stigma among young people, especially men, and to promote early intervention through education, conversation, and connection.
Their goal isn’t just to raise funds. It’s to start conversations, build awareness, and foster connection—all while encouraging a proactive approach to mental wellness.
Why 20 Hours?
Research shows it takes about 20 hours to get “good enough” at something new. That same logic applies to mental health advocacy—it doesn’t take a lifetime of experience to make a difference. Just 20 focused hours can:
-
Equip someone with the tools to support a friend.
-
Help someone find their voice.
-
Build a habit of checking in with themselves or others.
-
Inspire a community to take mental health seriously.
"20 Hours for 20Talk" turns this idea into action, symbolizing that small, consistent efforts can lead to meaningful change.
Why I’m Doing the Challenge
I’m taking on the 20 Hours for 20Talk challenge because mental health is something that has touched my life in more ways than one. Whether it’s supporting friends through tough times, dealing with my own mental health journey, or simply witnessing the silent struggles many people face every day—I know how important it is to make space for honest conversations.
Too often, we shy away from talking about mental health until things hit crisis point. But it shouldn’t have to be that way. This challenge is my way of saying: I care, I see you, and I want to help shift the culture.
By committing 20 hours of my time, I hope to:
-
Raise awareness for early intervention.
-
Support a community that prioritizes well-being.
-
Encourage others to speak up, reach out, and check in.
Every hour I dedicate is for those who feel unheard, unseen, or unsure. And if sharing my journey inspires even one person to open up or seek help, then it’s worth every minute.
How It Works
In order to raise funds for mental health charity 20Talk, I'm going to take on the challenge of sitting in a 2 metre square box for 20 hours with no technology and no talking. This challenge will be a small look into the day of someone struggling with mental health. All I will have is my own thoughts, a journal and a chair to sit on.
So why am I doing this?
We have all been touched in some way or another by the reality of mental health. It can be dark, lonely, and confronting.
Structurally, the statistics are still alarming..
- Suicide still remains the leading cause of death for young people aged 15-44.
- Only 2% of mental health funding goes towards prevention (Mental Health Commission 2022)
I'm completing the 20 Hours for 20Talk to turn these statistics around. Your contribution goes towards 20Talk's relatable prevention campaigns. They are a mental health charity that makes education cool and accessible, for young people by young people.
Your generous donations go towards:
- Every $120 puts a young person through a one day Mental Health Maintenance cours
- Expanding 20Talk's online resources and 60,000+ social media community
- Running large-scale interactive mental health events
By improving mental health literacy, removing harmful stigma, and encouraging professional help-seeking we are preventing people from getting people into crisis in the first place.
Thank you for taking the time to read this post and for donating to the cause. Hopefully this small challenge can help change someone’s life.
If you ever need to chat, I’m always here. Love you all and thanks again!
