20 Hours for 20Talk | Perth September 6th

Aleisha is taking on the 20-hour challenge to support youth mental health and raise awareness about the importance of prevention.

Why I’m Taking On 20 Hours of Silence for Mental Health

In a world that rarely slows down, I’ve decided to pause. For 20 hours, I’ll be sitting in a 2 metre square box no phone, no distractions, no conversation. Just a chair, a journal, and my thoughts. I’ll be completely silent, taking part in the 20 Hours for 20Talk challenge to raise funds and awareness for youth mental health.

This challenge isn’t just about being quiet. It’s a small window into the internal world of someone struggling with anxiety or depression where silence isn’t peaceful, but loud. Where the mind races, time drags, and isolation feels endless.

I know those feelings all too well.

I’ve battled with my own mental health anxiety that sneaks up on you when you least expect it, depression that makes even getting out of bed feel like a mountain. I know what it’s like to feel completely alone and question if things will ever get better. That’s why this cause is so close to my heart. I’ve been there. I’ve felt the weight. And I know how vital it is to have support, especially when you can’t find the words to ask for help.

I want to be clear I’m not doing this for validation, attention, or applause. I’m doing this because I believe in the power of stopping. Of sitting with yourself. Of facing your thoughts without running from them. No scrolling, no noise, no filter just raw connection with who I am, as I am. It’s uncomfortable, but maybe that’s the point.

Because for so many young people, the world is already uncomfortable. It’s loud. It’s fast. It’s full of highlight reels, pressure, and constant comparison. In this digital age, the expectations are sky high and the downtime is almost non-existent. It’s no wonder so many are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and completely lost.

By taking on this challenge, I’m hoping to not only raise awareness but to raise money that goes directly to supporting youth through 20Talk, a mental health charity focused on giving young people the tools and resources they need to speak up, get help, and feel heard.

Your donation big or small could be the reason someone feels less alone. Could be the reason they finally say, “I need help.” Could be the reason they get it.

So for 20 hours, I’ll be silent. But through this challenge, I hope to give a voice to those who feel like they’ve lost theirs.

Thank you for helping me make a difference.

In order to raise funds for mental health charity 20Talk, I'm going to take on the challenge of sitting in a 2 metre square box for 20 hours with no technology and no talking. This challenge will be a small look into the day of someone struggling with mental health. All I will have is my own thoughts, a journal and a chair to sit on.

So why am I doing this?

We have all been touched in some way or another by the reality of mental health. It can be dark, lonely, and confronting.

Structurally, the statistics are still alarming..

  • Suicide still remains the leading cause of death for young people aged 15-44.
  • Only 2% of mental health funding goes towards prevention (Mental Health Commission 2022)

I'm completing the 20 Hours for 20Talk to turn these statistics around. Your contribution goes towards 20Talk's relatable prevention campaigns. They are a mental health charity that makes education cool and accessible, for young people by young people.

Your generous donations go towards:

  • Every $300 puts a young person through a two-day Mental Health First Aid course
  • Expanding 20Talk's online resources and 60,000+ social media community
  • Running large-scale interactive mental health events

By improving mental health literacy, removing harmful stigma, and encouraging professional help-seeking we are preventing people from getting people into crisis in the first place.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post and for donating to the cause. Hopefully this small challenge can help change someone’s life.

If you ever need to chat, I’m always here. Love you all and thanks again!
