I'm participating in the 20 Hours for 20Talk.
This event will see me sitting in a 2m x 2m square for 20 Hours in silence with nothing but my water bottle, a journal and pen.
There will be no technology.
There will be no talking.
Yep, you heard that right.
This outrageous challenge is going to push me mentally to the limits.
But I'm doing it to help turn the statistics around.
It's a personal journey of self reflection and resilience, and a way to raise awareness about the importance of mental health. Since its inception, this event has inspired hundreds to step outside their comfort zones, raising over $200,000 and making a lasting impact on youth mental health across Australia.
Why a square?
The small, confined space symbolises the mental health struggles that many young people face-feeling trapped, overwhelmed, or isolated.
By stepping into this square, participants can better empathies with those experiencing these feelings and raise awareness about the importance of mental health support
It's a chance to reflect on how small changes in mindset, habits, and support systems can lead to significant improvements in wellbeing.
Why are we doing this?
- Underfunding in Suicide Prevention. 80% of the population is supported by 2% of mental health prevention funding (MHC, 2021)
- Poor Relatability. Researchers know the how to foster positive wellbeing but are failing educate young people in a way they can relate to and understand.
- Increasing Concern. The WHO predicts depression will be the world's leading disease by 2030 (WHO, 2021).
