20 Hours for 20Talk | Perth September 6th

Joanne is taking on the 20-hour challenge to support youth mental health and raise awareness about the importance of prevention.

20Talk Challenge

In a world that moves at the speed of scrolling thumbs and never-ending notifications, silence is rare. But from (insert date), I’ll be stepping into 20 hours of complete silence — no phone, no talking, no distractions — just me, a journal, a water bottle, and a 2x2 metre square. Why? Because I believe that mental health deserves our undivided attention.

I’m participating in 20 Hours for 20Talk, a powerful fundraising initiative designed to support young Australians aged 18–30 with practical, relatable mental health tools. The challenge is simple but meaningful: 20 hours of quiet reflection to raise $1,000 for a cause that speaks volumes.

Why 20Talk?

Let’s be real — mental health statistics in Australia are confronting:

  • 298 young Australians (aged 18–24) died by suicide in 2023.
  • Nearly 43% of Australians aged 16–85 have experienced a mental disorder at some point.
  • In 2023 alone, Kids Helpline received 12,000 suicide-related calls, nearly half requiring crisis intervention.
  • Teen happiness scores are the lowest they’ve been in a decade.

This isn’t just data — it’s lives, families, futures.

But here’s the good news: 20Talk is changing the game.

What Makes 20Talk Different?

Unlike conventional mental health campaigns, 20Talk focuses on prevention through relatable, scalable education. Whether it’s through their online content that reaches over 60,000 people or in-person Mental Health Maintenance courses, their work is making an impact:

  • 92% of participants feel more confident managing stress after attending.
  • 85% report sustained wellbeing improvements.
  • And stories like Alex’s — a 24-year-old who called the program “a game-changer” — are proof that this work matters.

Every $200 raised puts another young adult through the course. Every $1,000 funds a targeted online campaign to reach 80,000 more.

How You Can Help

My goal is to raise $1,000, and I can’t do it without you. Your donation — big or small — is an investment in the wellbeing of our future leaders, creatives, carers, and thinkers.

You can support my challenge by donating here: (insert fundraising link)

Or simply share this post and help spread the word.

Let’s create a world where talking about mental health is normal. Let’s make the silence meaningful. Let’s make change happen — one hour, one voice, one donation at a time.

20 Hours of Silence, Countless Voices Heard — Why I’m Taking on the 20Talk Challenge

Let’s set the scene: Me. A 2x2 metre square. No phone. No talking. No snacks. Just a swag, a water bottle, a journal, and what I assume will be some intense conversations with my inner thoughts. For 20 whole hours.

No, this isn’t a punishment. I haven’t lost a bet. I’ve voluntarily signed up for 20 Hours for 20Talk, and yes — I’m doing it stone-cold sober and fully conscious.

Why, you ask?

Because the mental health of young Australians matters more than my fear of boredom, FOMO, or missing my daily caffeine fix.

Who the heck is 20Talk and why should you care?

Glad you asked. 20Talk is a mental health charity doing incredible work for Aussies aged 18–30. They’re not your typical “scroll past” charity — they’re relatable, real, and radically changing how mental health education is delivered.

They’ve already run over 60 free training courses, created a bunch of high-impact online content, and built a supportive community that genuinely helps young people thrive — not just survive.

And the best part? They’re focused on prevention. That means giving people tools before life turns into a full-blown dumpster fire.

Let’s get serious for a sec (but just a sec)

Some not-so-fun facts:

  • In 2023, 298 young Australians (aged 18–24) died by suicide.
  • Kids Helpline fielded 12,000 suicide-related calls — nearly half involving serious crisis situations.
  • Aussie teens rated their happiness at 6.2 out of 10, the lowest in 10 years. (And that’s after including TikTok and bubble tea.)

Mental health support is underfunded, under-prioritised, and — quite frankly — misunderstood. That’s where 20Talk comes in.

They don’t just talk. They act. They educate. They empower.

So here’s what I’m doing (and why you should care)

On (insert date), I’ll be taking part in the 20 Hours for 20Talk challenge — 20 hours of glorious silence. No memes. No notifications. No sending weird reels to my group chat at 2 a.m. (They’ll be devastated, I know.)

I’ve set myself a goal to raise $1,000. That money helps:

  • Put real, living, breathing young adults through life-changing courses.
  • Reach tens of thousands of people online with content that’s not just “awareness” — it’s actual help.
  • Fight back against the stigma and silence surrounding mental health.

How can you help me help them (without joining me in a 2x2 box of silence)?

Easy.

✅ Donate to my fundraiser. Seriously, even $5 helps.

✅ Share this blog post with someone who might want to chip in.

✅ Cheer me on — or laugh at my expense. Either’s fine. I’m emotionally prepared.

Let’s make some noise by going quiet.

Final Thoughts (before I go off-grid for 20 hours)

Mental health matters. Young people matter. And with your help, we can change lives — with every dollar, every course, every conversation.

So go on — back me. Back 20Talk. And help us turn silence into strength.

For a great cause

Anyone who knows me, or has even been in my general vicinity, knows I love to talk! A regular old jabberjaws.
