Why am I doing this?
I like many, find mental health a constant challenge. Living in my own head can be an awful, manic and overwhelming place. I’m getting better at it, but it’s taking me years of lone research into coping, triggers, etc. To have been given the tools, knowledge, understanding and guidance as a younger me, would have been so much easier navigating through life. I would have been able to pass the baton (those tools) on to so many people around me too. Then those around others, and so on. Breaking the stigma and silence around the issue, and educating generations as the norm. Giving people ways to cope and carry out self care.
When you’re younger, things feel magnified too. And for me, that was growing up was without social media, addictive phone use, scare tactics, brainwashing, information overload, fake news, sophisticated scams, photo filters, 24/7 news and so on. There’s no switching off, no escape for our younger generation. And I feel it’s getting worse with growing pressures. It can feel overpowering and dark.
Completing this silent only event, confined to a 2m X 2m square for 20 hours, will isolate and challenge me, and take away my voice. The way that many feel daily.
The technology ban will force me to switch off, step away and really focus on managing my mindset without distractions. I will have a swag, water, a pen, paper and my thoughts.
The funds raised will go to youth mental health education and awareness, and suicide prevention.
