Breaking the Silence: Raising Awareness for Mental Health
Hi, I’m Shenal Constantine, a 21-year-old student currently pursuing a Certificate IV in Human Resource Management at TAFE. I migrated to Australia in 2019, just before turning 16 and faced many challenges adapting to a new country while balancing school, life, and personal struggles.
Coming from Sri Lanka, mental health was not an openly discussed topic. Conversations around emotions, struggles, and mental well-being were often avoided, making it difficult to seek support or even acknowledge the importance of mental health. However, moving to Australia and experiencing the challenges of settling into a new country shifted my perspective. Navigating a new environment, expectations, and personal hardships made me realize just how crucial mental health awareness and open discussions are.
To help create change, I am participating in the "20 Hours for 20Talk" challenge—spending 20 hours in complete silence to raise funds and awareness for youth mental health initiatives. 20Talk is an incredible organization that empowers young people with the tools and resources they need to maintain their mental well-being. Every dollar raised will go towards mental health scholarships, free training programs, and awareness campaigns that make a real impact.
