Sitting in Silence

I’ve been studying and working in the mental health space for over eight years. It’s not just my job — it’s my passion, my purpose, and something deeply personal to me.

Like so many others, I’ve faced my own mental health challenges, particularly anxiety throughout my early 20s. I’ve also seen too many people I care about struggle, feel isolated, or unsure where to turn for help.

Mental health affects all of us in one way or another — but for so many young Australians, the reality of feeling overwhelmed, alone, and unsupported is still far too common. Tragically, suicide remains the leading cause of death for young people aged 15 to 44. And yet, only 2% of mental health funding goes towards prevention.

That needs to change.

That’s why, on September 6th, I’m participating in 20 Hours for 20Talk. I’ll be sitting in a 2m x 2m square for 20 hours — no phone, no talking, no distractions — just me, a chair, a journal, and my thoughts.

It’s a small glimpse into the isolation, overwhelm, and disconnect so many people feel when they’re struggling with their mental health.

I’m doing this to honour my God Sister, Zara, who we lost to anorexia nearly four years ago at just 24. She fought her battle with incredible strength. This is for Zara, and for the thousands of young Australians struggling right now — the ones who feel trapped, overwhelmed, and alone.

20Talk is an incredible youth-led charity making mental health education and support accessible, relatable, and prevention-focused, specifically for young people.

• Expand 20Talk’s online resources and community

• Run events that make mental health education real, honest, and accessible

I know this experience will challenge me personally, and I’m ready for that.
