The Beginning
Today I was contacted by Paige at 20talk to confirm that I have been accepted to participate in the 20hour challenge.But why?
Mental health has always been my passion in life and I feel that it is incredibly important to recognise the daily impact mental illness has on hundreds of thousands of people. This recognition not only creates more empathy towards the struggles of our own family, friends, neighbours and strangers but also helps to reduce the stigma which is unfortunately still so prominent in our society even with mental illness being such a common experience for most people at some stage of their life.I have supported people that experience mental health challenges for over 5 years and with that work I have had the opportunity to walk alongside them in their journey of recovery and maintainence. But I have never truly sat down and experienced the loneliness that so many of my participants have had to go through of being with yourself and yourself only, constantly in your own thoughts and feelings.
Having this opportunity to sit with myself, connected to other people having the same experience is both terrifying and exciting all at the same time. I could honestly sit and talk to a wall and after that one way conversation feel content, that's how much i like to talk. But I also know the importance of self reflection and understanding so to have this opportunity is a massive privilege
