If talking could save a life… would you start the conversation?
Hi, I'm Tyson — and I'm taking part in 20 Hours for 20Talk this September in Perth.
This isn’t just another fundraiser. It’s something deeply personal.
In 2019, I lost my father to mental health. Not a day goes by that I don’t wonder what more could’ve been done — if someone had reached out, if he felt he could speak up, if the silence wasn’t so heavy. That loss changed my life forever, and it’s the reason I’m doing this.
I’m stepping far outside my comfort zone to honour his memory and to support those still battling in silence. Because no one — absolutely no one — should feel like they have to suffer alone.
Mental health affects every one of us, whether directly or through someone we love. And yet, too many people still feel isolated, ashamed, or afraid to speak. That’s what 20Talk is working to change — through real conversations, education, and peer support that meets young people where they are.
Why This Matters
298 Australians aged 18–24 died by suicide in 2023.
42.9% of Australians aged 16–85 experienced a mental disorder at some point between 2020 and 2022.
In 2023, Kids Helpline received 12,000 calls related to suicide, including 3,893 crisis interventions — nearly half involving suicide risk.
In the same year, young people aged 15–19 rated their happiness at just 6.2 out of 10 — the lowest score in over a decade.
Together, we can change this. We can show people they’re not alone. We can give them hope.
