Its getting closer and closer to the day of possibly my biggest challenge ever!

The though of not talking for 20 hours is a lot. But the thought of silence around me is terrifying. I always have music on. Or the TV. Or some sort of background noise. Mostly because music is life, but also because I need to keep my noisy brain distracted.

Let's hope I dont go in with a SUPER annoying song stuck in my head! That would make for a lonnnnng 20 hours if all I can think of is "manamanah, do do do do do, manamanah, do do do do, manamanah do do do do do, do do do, do do do, do do do do do"......

This is never going to work....

A few weeks ago i decided to sign up to this insane fundraising challenge.... thought that it might be a good way to help raise funds and awareness of youth mental health issues.

....then I chickened out. I wanted to participate, but all I could hear was my own doubts.

What if I dont reach my fundraising goal?
What if I cant get through the 20 hours?
What if people laugh at the insane idea of me having no device and not talking for 20 hours?

They almost won.

So today I decided was the day to actually post my fundraising page and ask for the support and help me with my goal because I am more than just my negative thoughts.

20 Hours of Silence for Youth Mental Health.

Mental health has been part of my story for most of my life.

Over the years I've been diagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder and ADHD, and after both of my pregnancies I also battled postnatal depression. I've spent more time than I'd like to admit in psychiatric hospitals, and for many years I suffered in silence because I was too ashamed to let people know what I was going through.

As a nurse, I now work hard to help change that narrative. I believe mental health deserves the same understanding, compassion and acceptance as any other health condition. No one should feel embarrassed to ask for help—especially our young people.

Anyone who knows me also knows this challenge is going to be incredibly difficult! Twenty hours without talking or using my devices might sound easy to some people, but for me it will be a real challenge. I'm equal parts determined and terrified!

The truth is, my mental health journey didn't end with a diagnosis. Every day is still a battle with my own mind. Even though I'm surrounded by an amazing blood family, a wonderful work family, my rescue family, and incredible friends who have become my chosen family, there are still days when my brain tries to convince me that I'm not enough. That's the reality of living with mental illness.

I'm taking part in 20 Hours of Silence because I want to help make sure today's young people don't have to struggle alone the way so many of us did. Early support, understanding and access to mental health services can change—and even save—lives.
