Why I’m Choosing Silence: A Personal Challenge for Mental Health and a Cause That Matters
On June 28th, I’ll be stepping into a 2m² space with nothing but a chair, sleeping bag, notebook, and pen. No phone. No conversation. No distractions. Just 20 hours of complete silence.
This might sound extreme but it’s deliberate.
I’m taking part in the 20Talk Mental Health Challenge, not just to raise funds, but to raise awareness for something deeply personal and incredibly important: men’s mental health.
Why This Challenge Matters to Me
As a coach, father, mate, and someone who works with men I know the pressure we carry. We wear the tough exterior, push through pain, and often suffer in silence.
But here’s the truth: silence can be both a prison and a teacher.
This challenge forces me to sit with my thoughts, without escape. It’s uncomfortable. It’s confronting. But it’s also necessary.
It’s a symbolic stand against the silence that too many men are trapped in every day afraid to speak, unsure how, or believing they have to deal with everything alone.
A Challenge for Growth
I’ve always believed that growth comes through discomfort. This 20-hour challenge isn’t just about isolation, it’s about intention.
It’s about creating space to reflect, reset, and reconnect.
I want to see what surfaces when there’s nowhere to hide, no scrolling, no distractions, no external noise.
Just me, my thoughts, and the courage to listen to what I often push down.
Raising $1,000 for a Cause That Saves Lives
While this is a personal journey, it’s also a public mission.
I’m aiming to raise $1,000 for 20Talk, a mental health charity doing powerful work to support young men struggling with anxiety, depression, and isolation.
Every dollar raised goes towards programs that create safe spaces, conversations, and connection for those who desperately need it.
This isn’t just a fundraiser. It’s a statement.
That we need to do better for ourselves, our mates, our brothers, sons, fathers, and friends.
