Breaking the Silence by Sitting in it
In order to raise funds for mental health charity 20Talk, I’m taking on the challenge of sitting in a 2-metre square box for 20 hours — in complete silence. No phone, no technology, no talking.
It’s a small way to give a glimpse into what a day can feel like for someone struggling with their mental health. For those 20 hours, all I’ll have is my own thoughts, a journal, and a chair to sit on.
So why am I doing this?
Most of us have been touched by mental health in one way or another — whether personally or through someone we love. It can be dark, lonely, and really confronting. And despite how common it is, the statistics are still pretty heavy:
- Suicide remains the leading cause of death for young people aged 15–44
- Only 2% of mental health funding goes towards prevention (Mental Health Commission, 2022)
I’m completing 20 Hours for 20Talk to help change that. 20Talk is a mental health charity that focuses on prevention and early education, making mental health conversations relatable, accessible, and led by young people for young people.
Your donations help fund:
- $120 putting a young person through a one-day Mental Health Maintenance course
- The growth of 20Talk’s online resources and 60,000+ social media community
- Large-scale, interactive mental health events
By improving mental health literacy, breaking down stigma, and encouraging people to seek help earlier, we can stop people from reaching crisis in the first place.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and for supporting the cause. Hopefully this small, quiet challenge can help make a big difference for someone.
And if you ever need a chat — I’m always here.
Love you all, and thank you 🤍
